WHY SPORTS MATTER

Sports programs can increase protective factors for positive youth development and decrease certain risk factors for juvenile delinquency. Regardless of which sports youth participate in, concepts such as teamwork, facing challenges and adversity, and experiencing the benefits of hard work are universal.

HISTORY OF ATHLETES 4 ATHLETES

Joey and Mason started Athletes 4 Athletes in 2024. As student athletes, they spent countless hours practicing, playing on club teams, and participating in tournaments that required travel and costly equipment. These tournaments allowed them an opportunity to play at the next level.

In addition to their love for sports, Joey and Mason had something else in common: both had moms who worked with foster youth. They knew that opportunities were limited for youth in foster care, especially for expensive sports at an elite level. As Joey and Mason became more serious about lacrosse, they thought about the cost of the sport-- shoulder pads, gloves, helmets and sticks. Having access to this equipment allowed them to excel in the sport. And so, Athletes 4 Athletes was created to promote athletic opportunities for youth in foster care.

WHY ATHLETES 4 ATHLETES IS UNIQUE

Athletes 4 Athletes is different from other funding sources because of the ease and speed in which the money can be provided to the caregiver to pay necessary registration fees and pay for equipment. Once there is a request from a youth or caretaker to fund an activity, the request is processed by CLS staff so that the youth doesn’t miss the opportunity due to the “system” and lengthy wait times.

OUR GOALS

Expand opportunities for student athletes to compete at a higher level and overcome socioeconomic limitations that keep them off of elite playing fields. Raise money for youth in foster care so that they have the opportunities that sports provide. We want to help others have the chances we have been given. We want to level the playing field and help caregivers with the cost of sports programs.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Children’s Legal Services of San Diego provides legal representation for nearly 4,000 foster children per year in San Diego County. A donation to Athletes 4 Athletes goes directly to CLS and will be solely used to pay for foster youth participation in an activity. We track how many youth benefit from donations.                              â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
