Coming Of Age

Coming of Age is a phrase typically associated with celebrations and the hope of unlimited possibilities as a child crosses from childhood into adulthood. It is anything but this optimistic picture for youth in the foster care system. Each year, approximately 300 foster children reach age 18 and are expected to transition to adulthood, but lack the skills and resources to support this transition.

50% - WON'T RECEIVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA

50% - WILL BE HOMELESS AFTER LEAVING THE SYSTEM

50% - OF YOUTH LEAVING FOSTER CARE ARE UNEMPLOYED

33% - RECEIVE PUBLIC ASSISTANCE (NATIONAL DATA)

60% -GIRLS WILL BECOME PREGNANT WITHIN 2 YEARS AFTER LEAVING FOSTER CARE

90% - WILL NOT ATTEND COLLEGE

Children’s Legal Services of San Diego (CLSSD) plays a key role in the lives of children, infant through age 21, by giving them voice in the courtroom. The child’s attorney is the only person in the court speaking exclusively on behalf of the child, ensuring their needs are met. Our highly trained attorneys, investigators and support staff are tireless advocates for this vulnerable population. They advocate for family reunification, educational opportunity, health and mental health services, permanence and self-sufficiency. Our lawyers guide them through the complicated and overwhelming foster care system and the accompanying dependency court process.

CLSSD is one of the few organizations that continues to provide services in this critical time from age 18-21.

CLSSD will be participating in upcoming meetings with city and county officials to advocate for more services and funding for this group of our clients.
